H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American writer whose work laid the foundation for modern cosmic horror. His fiction, including The Call of Cthulhu, At the Mountains of Madness, and The Shadow over Innsmouth, is characterised by its emphasis on the insignificance of humanity within a vast and unknowable universe. Though not widely recognised during his lifetime, Lovecraft's influence has grown steadily, shaping both horror and speculative fiction.
