The Development of Indicator Systems - Using the Elbe Floodplain ('Elbaue') as an Example River valley areas are among Europe's most complex and species-rich ecological systems. Owing to massive human impacts, these habitats have been greatly modified. Until now, there has been no reliable and easily implemented procedure with which to record and evaluate these modifications.
