Zusammenfassung

What happens when artificial intelligence stops answering questions-and starts assigning the work?
The first generation of AI waited for us. We typed a prompt. It produced an answer. We decided what happened next.
That era is already giving way to something far more consequential: AI agents-systems that can pursue objectives, use tools, make decisions, complete multi-step tasks, and evaluate the results of their own work.
But The Age of Agents goes one step further.
What happens when one AI agent can delegate work to another? When agents supervise other agents, reject their work, commission replacements, and even help create new agents designed for specific tasks? The result is no longer simply an AI assistant. It begins to resemble an organization made of machines that can organize other machines.
The Age of Agents explores this emerging world from the inside out: how individual agents work, why delegation becomes necessary, how supervisory agents can review the work of others, and how entire synthetic hierarchies can emerge. Humans can direct agents; agents can direct other agents; agents can help build agents; and those agents can coordinate still more agents-all using technologies whose basic components already exist.
The implications reach far beyond automation.
When digital workers can be created in seconds, specialized for a single assignment, coordinated by other agents, and discarded when the work is finished, the economics of organizations begin to change. Work that once required teams, meetings, managers, and months of coordination may increasingly be performed by temporary networks of specialized AI systems.
But greater autonomy creates a harder problem: authority.
Who decides what an agent is allowed to do? How far can it delegate its permissions? What happens when an agent creates another agent with capabilities its human supervisors never intended? And when dozens of agents contribute to a decision, who is ultimately accountable when something goes wrong?
The book argues for a critical boundary: authority should narrow as it moves through an agent hierarchy, while irreversible actions-moving money, deleting records, sending consequential communications, or making commitments-remain connected to human accountability.
This is not a story about conscious machines or science-fiction robots taking control. It is about something more immediate: a new architecture of work, delegation, supervision, and power that can be assembled from technologies already arriving today.
The question of the AI age may no longer be simply:
How intelligent will machines become?
It may be:
When machines can organize other machines, who is actually in charge?
