Dewey W. Grantham is the Holland N. McTyeire Professor of History Emeritus at Vanderbilt University. A former president of the Southern Historical Association, he has taught, researched, and written about the South and American history for more than forty-one years. Among his books, Hoke Smith and the Politics of the New South won the Charles S. Sydnor Award from the Southern Historical Association. He is also the author of The Regional Imagination: The South and Recent American History, Southern Progressivism: The Reconciliation of Progress and Tradition, and The Life and Death of the Solid South.
